There are many tattoo trends that have come and gone over the years – tribal patterns, barbed wire, motivational Chinese characters, and the unfortunately named "tramp stamp," to name a few. But none of those fads are as zany as the upper-ear tattoo.

More people are entering tattoo parlors requesting a spot of ink inside their ears, according to The New York Times. The trend reportedly sparked when several celebrities, including Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and model Cara Delevingne, were spotted sporting bold ink designs inside their upper ears. Ranging from the stars and hearts to spiderwebs and musical notes, the inside-ear tattoos are no doubt eye-catching and eclectic. But will the ear tattoo have any staying power or instantly incite tattoo regret?

"Here in New York, people want something that's more different or makes them feel extraordinary in some way," John Raftery, a New York City-based tattoo artist, told the news source. "We ask the person if they're going to get fired, but I try not to get too caught up in the thought process behind someone getting something, just whether it will work or not."

Considering the tattoo's popularity on Pinterest, which has a whole page dedicated to the unconventional ink, it seems like upper-ear tattoos may be the tattoo trend of 2014. But before you rush out to get an earful of ink, remember that nearly one-third of people with tattoos end up regretting it, according to a 2012 survey out of the U.K. After all, there's hardly a more visible tattoo than one decorating your ear.
